Manage vegetable garden pests

Inspect first and intervene only when damage justifies it. A useful pest-management routine protects the crop while preserving pollinators, predators and the wider garden system.

Define the damage before naming the pest

Inspect the whole plant, both leaf surfaces, stems, growing points, nearby soil and neighbouring plants. Note whether damage is chewed, mined, distorted, discoloured, wilted or covered with residue. Look for eggs, cast skins, droppings, webbing, slime trails and the animal itself, but do not assume the first creature found caused the symptom.

Record when the problem appeared and whether it affects one plant, one crop or a wider zone. Frost, drought, waterlogging, nutrient imbalance, herbicide drift and disease can resemble pest injury. Compare symptoms with a reliable crop-specific source or seek diagnostic help before choosing a control.

Choose a threshold for action

A healthy established plant can often tolerate some feeding without a meaningful loss of harvest. Seedlings, growing points and newly transplanted crops have less spare tissue, while damage to the marketable root, leaf or fruit may justify earlier action. Set the threshold around crop survival and usable yield rather than cosmetic perfection.

Mark several plants and compare them at each inspection. If damage is stable and new growth is healthy, monitoring may be enough. If the affected area expands, plants lose vigour or the vulnerable crop stage is short, move to the least disruptive effective response.

Prevent avoidable outbreaks

Match crops to suitable light, soil, spacing and season so they are not already stressed. Use reputable plants and inspect them before introducing them. Remove badly affected crop residue when reliable guidance identifies it as a source of reinfection, clean reusable supports and containers, and control volunteer host plants where they carry a recurring problem.

Rotation can help with problems that persist in soil or crop debris, but changing beds is not a universal cure: mobile pests can cross the garden and some organisms have many hosts. Keep concise records of the crop family, location and confirmed problem using the crop rotation planner and garden journal.

Exclude pests before they arrive

Use mesh, fleece, collars or other barriers only when they match the pest, crop and season. The opening must be small enough, edges must be sealed and the material needs enough support to stay off vulnerable leaves. Install protection before the expected arrival rather than after eggs or larvae are already enclosed with the crop.

Inspect covers for tears, trapped wildlife, overheating, restricted growth and weeds lifting the edges. Some fruiting crops need pollinator access, so their cover timing must account for flowering. A barrier is a managed crop system, not a sheet that can be fitted once and ignored.

Use direct controls precisely

Hand removal, pruning a limited affected part, trapping and a directed water jet can reduce some pests when identification and crop tolerance make the method suitable. Check plants repeatedly because one pass may miss eggs or newly hatched individuals. Dispose of affected material in a way that does not spread the organism elsewhere.

Traps are most informative when they are labelled, checked and recorded. They may reveal when a pest is active without protecting the crop by themselves. Avoid devices that can capture non-target animals, and do not place baits or traps where children, pets or wildlife can reach them.

Support natural regulation

A varied garden with flowers across the season, permanent shelter and minimal unnecessary pesticide use can support predators and parasitoids. Learn to recognise common beneficial organisms and their immature stages before removing them. The presence of aphids, caterpillars or other prey can be part of the food web even when a local population needs managing on a vulnerable crop.

Review plant health and hygiene

Overcrowded, drought-stressed or overfed plants may be more vulnerable to particular problems. Adjust spacing, watering and feeding using the crop's actual needs rather than trying to force rapid recovery. Clean tools after working with suspicious material and avoid moving infested soil, plants or cuttings around the garden.

Source new plants carefully and inspect them before purchase and again before planting. The RHS plant-health guidance recommends checking introductions, keeping plants in suitable conditions and tolerating limited damage to reduce unnecessary pesticide use.

Treat pesticides as the final, regulated option

Do not spray first and identify later. Broad or repeated treatment can harm non-target organisms, remove natural enemies and still miss a pest protected inside leaves, stems or soil. Homemade mixtures are not automatically safe for plants, people, wildlife or food crops.

If a serious confirmed problem remains after appropriate non-chemical measures, check whether a currently authorised home-garden product explicitly permits the crop and target use. Follow the complete label, including dose, protective measures, harvest interval, storage and disposal. Use an inspection loop

Observe, identify, set a threshold, choose the least disruptive effective action and inspect again. Record both crop recovery and non-target effects so next season's protection starts before the same damage becomes severe.
