Check below the surface before watering
A dry-looking surface does not prove that the root zone is dry, and a wet surface does not show how deeply the last watering reached. Move mulch aside and inspect the soil or growing medium at several representative points. Use a finger, trowel or soil probe at a depth relevant to the crop, then note whether the material is dry, evenly moist or saturated.
Check more often during hot, bright or windy weather and wherever soil volume is limited. Containers, newly planted crops and shallow-rooted seedlings can change quickly. Heavy soil may remain wet below a dry crust, while a light or very organic mix can lose usable water rapidly. Prioritise crops at vulnerable stages
New sowings need a consistently moist seed zone while they germinate, but a forceful stream can wash seed away or seal the surface. Transplants need close attention until new roots extend into surrounding soil. Fast-growing leaves, swelling roots and developing pods or fruit can also lose quality when moisture repeatedly swings between very dry and very wet.
Do not assume every crop needs the same routine. Established deep-rooted plants in open soil may draw on a larger reserve than lettuces, radishes or container crops. Check the relevant plant guide for crop-specific priorities and use observed conditions to decide what needs water first.
Deliver water to the root zone
Apply water to the soil around the plant rather than routinely wetting the foliage. Work slowly enough for water to infiltrate instead of running onto paths or pooling against stems. On a slope, crusted surface or very dry container mix, divide the application into passes so the first pass begins wetting the material and the next can penetrate further.
After watering, check a small test area to see how deep the moisture travelled. If only the upper layer is wet, adjust the application time, flow or method. The aim is not to make the surface look dark; it is to wet the active root zone without leaving it persistently saturated.
Measure the method once
A hose, sprinkler, drip line and watering can deliver very different amounts. Calibrate the method instead of guessing from minutes alone. For a watering can, record its capacity and how many plants or metres of row it serves. For an irrigation zone, place several straight-sided containers across the wetted area, run the system for a known time and compare the collected depths.
Uneven results reveal blocked outlets, pressure loss, wind drift or poor placement. Recheck after changing a hose layout, adding emitters or altering water pressure. A measured baseline makes it easier to shorten or extend an application as soil and weather change.
Use weather as evidence, not a promise
A forecast shower may wet leaves and the soil surface without reaching roots. Check the garden after rain before cancelling or adding irrigation. Early morning is usually the most useful watering window because evaporation is lower and plants can take up water as the day warms; the RHS watering guidance also recommends morning watering where practical.
Water whenever a vulnerable crop genuinely needs it, even if the timing is imperfect. If evening is the only option, direct water to the soil and avoid leaving foliage unnecessarily wet overnight. During restrictions or limited supply, prioritise food crops at critical stages rather than spreading small amounts over every part of the garden.
Separate beds from containers
Open soil has a larger water reserve, so a thorough application followed by another root-zone check is usually more useful than automatic light watering. Raised beds can dry faster through their exposed surfaces and sides. Mulch can reduce evaporation, but it must not hide saturation or stop you checking underneath.
Containers depend on a small volume of growing medium and may need frequent checks in summer. Water until the root ball is evenly moistened and excess can leave through unobstructed drainage holes; never compensate for poor drainage by simply using less water. Grouping containers by size, crop and exposure makes the routine more consistent.
Respond to symptoms carefully
Wilting can indicate dry roots, but it can also occur temporarily in midday heat or when waterlogged and damaged roots cannot function. Yellowing, splitting, blossom-end problems and poor growth can have several causes. Inspect soil moisture, drainage, roots, recent weather and the pattern of affected plants before changing the whole watering routine.
Record persistent dry spots and areas that remain wet after the rest of the bed drains. Those patterns may point to compacted soil, buried obstructions, leaking fittings, undersized containers or a poorly balanced irrigation zone. Fix the cause instead of relying on repeated rescue watering.
