Split, store and season firewood

Good firewood is mostly a timing and airflow problem. Cut and split the wood in late winter or spring, stack it off the ground in an open, breezy spot with the top covered, and let it dry for a full summer—hard woods like oak and maple may need a full year. Wood at 15–20% moisture lights easily, burns hot and keeps the chimney cleaner; wetter wood smokes, wastes heat and builds creosote.

Plan the supply before you cut

Work out how much wood the household actually burns before buying or felling anything. Firewood is sold and counted in cords: a full cord is a stack 4 ft high, 4 ft wide and 8 ft long (about 1.2 × 1.2 × 2.4 m). Dealers often sell face cords—4 ft high, 8 ft long and only as wide as the pieces—so convert any offer to a full-cord volume before comparing prices. A realistic first-year estimate comes from the appliance, the house and the weather, not from a neighbour's pile.

Species matter less than dryness. All wood carries roughly the same energy per pound; species differ mainly in density. Dense hardwoods such as oak, maple and hickory hold more energy per cord and give long-lasting coals, while softer woods such as pine, spruce, birch and aspen burn faster and suit mild-weather fires. The best species is the one that is plentiful, easy to split and available locally—plan to burn a blend rather than chasing one premium tree.

Size the pieces to the appliance. Cut logs to a length at least 3 in (7.5 cm) shorter than the firebox so they load and stoke easily; 14–18 in (35–45 cm) suits most wood stoves. Split to a range of sizes, roughly 3–6 in (7.5–15 cm) across the largest face, so each load mixes quick-igniting small pieces with larger pieces that burn steadily.

Split the wood safely

Split along the grain rather than across it: the axe or splitter follows the natural lines and the wood opens with far less force. A wedge and maul handle most garden and orchard wood; a mechanical splitter earns its keep on large volumes, hard species or knotty logs. Oak, especially green oak, is dense and stubborn—split it in sections or let it dry a little first.

Split soon after cutting. Do not let unsplit logs lie on the ground for more than a couple of days: mould and rot set in quickly, and rot is wasted fuel. Work in batches—cut, split, stack—so the pile never sits waiting.

Treat splitting as a safety-critical task. Wear eye protection, gloves and sturdy boots, split on a stable stump or block, keep the swing area clear of people and obstacles, and never split with two people facing each other. Control the tool on every swing: a deflected axe or a slipping wedge is the common cause of splitting injuries. Keep the axe or splitter blade sharp, because a dull tool needs more force and more force causes slips.

Stack for airflow, not for looks

Seasoning is evaporation from the split faces, so the stack must let air and sun reach the wood. Stack in separate rows in an open location where summer sun can warm it and breezes can carry the moisture away. Leave gaps between rows and between pieces so air moves through the pile, and keep the pieces aligned so the stack stays stable.

Keep the wood off the ground on pallets, poles or rails. This stops the bottom layer rotting, keeps ground moisture out and lets air pass under the stack. Cover the top of the pile to shed rain, but leave the sides completely open—a fully enclosed stack traps the moisture it is trying to lose. Do not store unseasoned wood tightly in a closed, unvented shed or garage; it will stay wet and can grow mould.

Time the work to the weather. Wood cut, split and stacked in late winter or early spring can be ready by autumn if it is a softer species. Extremely hard woods such as oak and maple, and large pieces, may take at least a full year to dry, and damp maritime climates slow everything down. If winter arrives before the wood reaches 20% moisture or less, leave it to season longer and obtain properly dried fuel for immediate use. Do not burn wet wood: it produces more smoke and tar, gives less useful heat, and increases deposits and fire risk in the appliance and chimney.

Judge when the wood is dry

Freshly cut wood can hold up to half its weight in water; wood that burns well is down to 15–20% moisture. You do not need a moisture meter to make that call—use several indicators together:

  • Checks or cracks in the end grain, where the ends have split open as the wood dried.
  • Colour: the cut face darkens from white or cream to grey or yellow as it dries.
  • Sound: two dry pieces banged together ring hollow; wet pieces sound solid and dull.
  • Weight: a dry armful weighs noticeably less than a wet one.
  • Feel: split a piece and check the fresh face—if it feels damp, the wood is still too wet.

When in doubt, burn a test piece. Dry wood ignites easily and burns quietly; wet wood is hard to light, hisses and steams in the fire.

Move it to winter storage

Once the wood is seasoned, move it to winter storage: a dry area fully sheltered from rain and snow, close to the house but not inside it. Large quantities should not be stored indoors, where mould growth can contaminate the air with spores, though a small amount kept inside gives the wood time to warm to room temperature before burning, which helps it light.

Keep the winter stack tidy and accessible, with the oldest wood easiest to reach so it is used first. Set aside a small supply of small, well-seasoned pieces as kindling and starter wood—starting a fire with a few quick-igniting splits is easier than forcing large pieces to catch.

Burn it cleanly

Wet wood is the main cause of dirty burning. It wastes energy evaporating water, smokes, and deposits creosote in the flue, which can fuel a chimney fire. Burn seasoned wood, light fires with kindling and small splits rather than newspaper and large logs, and keep the flue clear and inspected on the schedule the appliance and local rules require. A stove that runs hot with dry wood is both more efficient and safer than one smouldering on damp fuel.

Season before you burn

A full summer of open-air drying is the difference between a fuel that pays for itself and a pile of damp logs that smokes. If you only have time for one thing, it is stacking the wood off the ground with the sides open in spring.
