Prevent and treat indoor pests and diseases

Most indoor plant problems start with a plant that is stressed or a pest that arrived on a new purchase. A short routine of inspection, quarantine, sanitation and environment control stops most problems before they need treatment.

Inspect before you treat

Examine the whole plant: both leaf surfaces, stems, growing points, the soil line and, where practical, the roots. Note whether leaves are chewed, curled, speckled, silvery, sticky or covered in webbing or white fluff. Check several plants, not just the one that looks worst, and compare affected plants with healthy ones.

Do not assume the first creature you find caused the symptom. Overwatering, dry air, cold roots, salt build-up and nutrient problems can mimic pest and disease damage. Know the common indoor pests

Aphids are small, soft-bodied, pear-shaped insects that cluster on new growth and buds. Feeding causes curled, distorted or stunted leaves, and the sticky honeydew they excrete supports black sooty mould on the surfaces below. They multiply quickly in warm indoor conditions and can be dislodged with a strong jet of water.

Mealybugs appear as fluffy white wax in leaf axils, leaf sheaths and other sheltered crevices. Wingless adult females move slowly, while the short-lived adult males of some species have wings and can fly. Infestations are commonly introduced on plants or growing material. Scale insects sit beneath waxy coverings, often near the main veins on leaf undersides, and can produce the same honeydew and sooty mould.

Whiteflies are tiny, white, moth-like sap-feeding insects—not moths—and adults lift off when a leaf is disturbed. Thrips are slender insects that turn leaves dull or silvery, sometimes with tiny dark specks. Spider mites are not insects but tiny arachnids that cause fine pale mottling on the upper leaf surface and, in heavy infestations, fine webbing; they thrive in warm, dry air. Fungus gnats hover around the surface of wet growing medium, where their larvae feed mainly on fungi and decaying organic matter and may damage fine roots.

Know the common indoor diseases

Root and crown rot is the most serious disease in containers. Roots turn dark, mushy and limp, and the plant wilts and declines; the Iowa State University houseplant disease guide notes that plants rarely recover. The rot is caused by water moulds and fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia and Thielaviopsis, which thrive in waterlogged medium, containers without drainage, saucers left full of water and frequent overwatering.

Powdery mildew starts as small powdery colonies that spread across leaves. Grey mould (Botrytis) appears as tan, papery patches covered in grey, fuzzy growth, often on flowers and dying tissue. Leaf spots are brown to black marks that enlarge with age. All three are favoured by overcrowding, low light, poor air circulation, high humidity and leaves that stay wet after misting or overhead watering. Viral diseases show as mosaic patterns, mottling or ringspot; they cannot be cured, and an affected edible plant should be removed from the setup.

Prevent problems before they start

Quarantine new plants. Pests are most often introduced on new purchases. Inspect them carefully before they join the collection and, where possible, keep them isolated for at least a month so that eggs and nymphs have time to develop and be seen. The RHS specifically recommends this for mealybugs and scale, which are usually carried in rather than arriving on their own.

Keep the environment hostile to disease. Space plants for air movement, provide effective drainage, water on a wet–dry cycle rather than a fixed calendar, keep light levels adequate for the crop and avoid leaving foliage wet. Sanitise the system. Work with clean soil, containers and tools, and wash reusable pots before reusing them. Remove dead leaves and spent material, empty water trays after watering, and do not let stagnant water sit in the growing area. Refresh the medium when its structure breaks down, because dense, soggy medium is where rot takes hold.

Monitor regularly. A weekly look at new growth, leaf undersides and the soil line catches small populations while they are still manageable. Record what you find and where, so you can see whether a problem is spreading or contained.

Treat pests with the least disruptive option

Start with physical action: isolate the affected plant, remove badly infested leaves or the whole plant if it is heavily affected, and wash remaining insects off with a directed water spray. The RHS notes that plants can tolerate some levels of sap feeders, and that disposing of a heavily affected plant is often simpler than trying to eliminate the population.

If the population persists, use a targeted product such as an insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, applied to the parts of the plant where the pest actually feeds, including leaf undersides. These products work by contact, so coverage matters more than strength, and repeat applications on a short interval are usually needed because eggs and newly hatched stages are not killed. Check the label for the specific pest, the crop and indoor use, and follow the full instructions.

Spider mites respond poorly to many insect products, so use a miticide or horticultural oil where the label permits, and raise humidity and airflow around the affected plants. Biological control is another option: the mealybug ladybird Cryptolaemus montrouzieri and parasitic wasps are effective against mealybugs, and ladybirds, lacewings and hoverfly larvae prey on aphids. These are living, pest-specific tools that need suitable temperatures and timing, so check the supplier's guidance before ordering.

Treat diseases by fixing the environment

Most fungicides prevent the spread of disease rather than curing an established infection, and they do not work on bacterial or viral problems. A valuable plant with limited early root damage may be salvageable: isolate it, remove affected roots, repot it in fresh, well-draining medium in a clean container with drainage and correct the wet conditions that favoured the problem. Discard plants with extensive root or crown rot and sanitise reusable pots and tools. For powdery mildew, grey mould and leaf spot, improve spacing and air movement, raise light levels where appropriate, reduce excess humidity and stop wetting the foliage.

If a confirmed fungal problem persists on an edible crop after the environment is corrected, a fungicide labelled for the crop and the disease may be appropriate. Check the label for both the plant species and the disease, follow the dose and any harvest interval, and keep treatment products clearly separate from food and growing containers. Keep the setup food-safe

Indoor food plants are eaten, so the treatment choice matters more than it does for ornamentals. Prefer physical and cultural controls, use the smallest effective amount of any product, observe the label's instructions and harvest interval, and wash harvested leaves and fruit before use. Store any treatment products out of reach of children and pets, and never repurpose a product for a use its label does not cover.

Run a weekly protection loop

Inspect new growth and leaf undersides, quarantine new purchases, empty trays, check the root zone and note any change. Most indoor outbreaks are caught at a stage where isolation and a water spray are enough.
