Create a succession planting plan

Succession planting coordinates sowing, harvest and bed turnover. The goal is a useful flow of produce—not keeping every patch occupied at any cost.

Choose the type of succession

Repeat sowing means starting small batches of the same crop at intervals. It suits quick crops whose quality window is short, such as radish, salad leaves and dwarf beans. Follow-on cropping uses the same space for different crops in sequence, such as early peas followed by kale. A third approach uses varieties with different maturity times from one sowing.

Use succession only where it solves a real problem: a glut, an empty bed or a harvest gap. Many long-season crops need one well-timed sowing, while cut-and-come-again crops may supply weeks of harvest without repeated batches.

Plan backwards from a useful harvest

Decide how much of a crop you can use in a week, then estimate how many plants make that amount. Schedule the first small batch and give it an expected harvest window. The next sowing should be tied to that window, not automatically set a fixed number of days later.

Growth rate changes through the season. A fortnight between spring sowings may produce a useful gap, while the same interval in warm weather can bring both batches to harvest together. Later crops also slow as daylight declines, so their sowing intervals may need to shorten before the final practical sowing date.

Give follow-on crops enough lead time

A second crop often needs to be ready before the first leaves the bed. Raise sturdy transplants in modules where the crop tolerates it, or reserve seed and propagation space in advance. Record both the expected clearance date and the latest acceptable planting date.

Do not depend on an exact harvest date from the first crop. Weather, pests and household demand can all change it. Include a buffer or a temporary holding option for transplants, and choose a flexible fallback location when possible.

Protect soil and crop health

Continuous occupation is not automatically good use of a bed. Allow time to remove diseased material, control perennial weeds, repair irrigation and add compost or mulch where needed. Avoid repeating a pest-prone crop family in the same place simply to fill a gap.

Fast-growing catch crops still need adequate water, nutrients, light and root space. Intercropping works best when the temporary crop will be harvested before it competes seriously with the main planting. Give every temporary crop a clear removal trigger.

Track four dates for each batch

Record the planned sowing date, actual sowing date, first harvest and final harvest. These four points show whether the interval produced a gap or an overlap. Add a brief reason when a batch failed, bolted or remained in the ground longer than planned.

Review the schedule every two weeks. Cancel a sowing if existing crops are producing more than needed, and bring a batch forward if a failure creates a gap. The plan is a queue of decisions, not a contract.

Finish with a realistic last sowing

Late sowings need enough warmth and daylight to reach a useful stage. Work backwards from the point when growth normally slows in your garden and add a margin for poor weather. Under cover, hardy leaves may remain harvestable into winter even when they make little new growth.
