Many cultivars can set fruit alone, but a second compatible cultivar flowering at the same time often improves pollination, berry size and harvest spread. Check nursery information for compatibility and local adaptation rather than buying two plants with unrelated flowering periods.

Test the site and soil
Choose full sun for the strongest cropping, although plants can tolerate partial shade with a smaller harvest. Shelter flowers from persistent wind and avoid frost pockets. Soil must retain useful moisture without waterlogging.
Test pH before planting. Blueberries are adapted to strongly acidic soil and develop nutrient problems when pH is too high. Do not amend one small hole with ericaceous compost inside alkaline soil; surrounding water and soil will continue to influence the roots. Use a container or purpose-designed bed where the required conditions can be maintained.
Blueberries have fine shallow roots. Remove perennial weeds before planting and mulch with a suitable acidic or neutral low-salt material without burying the stem base.
Plant and space bushes
Plant dormant bare-root or container-grown bushes while conditions are cool and soil is workable. Soak dry root balls, loosen circling outer roots gently and set the plant at its previous depth. Water thoroughly and label the cultivar.

Containers and water quality
Start one bush in a stable container at least 40cm wide with generous drainage, then repot before roots become congested. Use peat-free ericaceous growing medium and renew part of it according to product and plant condition. Keep pots from overheating or standing in water.
Container pH can rise through irrigation. Rainwater is often useful where tap water is alkaline, but it must be collected and stored safely. If leaf symptoms persist, test the growing medium and investigate water alkalinity rather than adding improvised household acids.
Water, feed and prune
Maintain even moisture from flowering through fruit development and after harvest while next year's buds form. Drip or water at the base, checking beneath mulch. Drought causes small fruit and weak shoot growth; saturation excludes air from roots.
Use a feed formulated for acid-loving plants only when the growing medium, soil test or product schedule indicates it. Excess fertiliser damages fine roots. Young bushes need little pruning beyond dead, damaged or crossing growth. On established plants, remove some of the oldest low-vigour wood during dormancy while retaining a balanced supply of younger productive stems.

Install wildlife-safe netting before fruit colours, keeping it taut and checked so animals cannot become trapped. Remove damaged fruit and diagnose regional diseases before treating or propagating the plant.
Harvest and storage
Blueberries often turn blue before developing full sweetness. Pick when berries detach with a gentle roll and have remained fully coloured for the cultivar's expected ripening period. Harvest dry fruit into shallow containers and cool it promptly.
Do not wash berries until shortly before use. Freeze sound dry berries where appropriate, or preserve them with a tested process. Record cultivar, flowering period, first harvest, pH checks and pruning so poor performance can be traced to plant choice or root-zone conditions.
