Quick answer

Grow sweet melons in sustained warmth, strong sun and fertile, moisture-retentive but freely draining soil. In most of the UK, use a greenhouse or polytunnel and choose a cultivar bred for cool summers. Sow indoors with heat in mid-spring, then plant only when nights remain reliably above 12–15°C.

Train vines up sturdy supports or give them room to trail. Keep water steady, ensure flowers are pollinated and limit each plant to the number of fruits its season can ripen. Support hanging melons in slings and harvest only when cultivar-specific aroma, colour and stem cues show ripeness.

Choose the crop and system together

This guide covers sweet melons, Cucumis melo, including cantaloupe and honeydew types. Watermelon is a different species with different space and ripening needs. Cantaloupes selected for shorter, cooler seasons offer the best chance outdoors in a warm UK site; honeydews generally need protected heat.

Read the seed description for days to maturity, fruit size, disease resistance, training habit and whether the cultivar is suitable outdoors. A compact small-fruited type is more realistic in a short season than a large late cultivar. Grafted plants can bring vigour and resistance to some soil-borne problems but still need warmth.

Heat, light and soil

Give melons at least six hours of direct sun, ideally eight or more, with warmth around both leaves and roots. Ventilate protected structures on hot days: warmth is useful, stagnant extreme heat can damage flowers and encourage pests.

Use fertile soil enriched with mature compost, or fresh peat-free potting compost in containers. The root zone should hold consistent moisture but drain freely. Cold saturated soil causes weak growth and root disease. Raised beds can speed warming outdoors, but they need careful irrigation.

Do not rush planting. RHS guidance recommends planting from late May once temperatures remain above 12–15°C. The University of Minnesota Extension similarly stresses warm soil and notes that melons are sensitive to root disturbance.

Sowing and transplanting

Sow indoors from mid-April to mid-May in small individual pots at about 18–21°C. Place seed on its side, cover lightly and keep the medium just moist. After emergence, give seedlings bright light and steady warmth.

Avoid starting too early. A young plant with three or four true leaves moves more successfully than an old, tangled vine. Harden outdoor plants gradually without exposing them to chilling nights.

Transplant the intact root ball at its existing depth. Water it in with tepid water and protect outdoor plants with a cloche at first, ventilating whenever conditions are warm enough. Do not cultivate deeply around established vines because cucurbit roots are easily damaged.

Containers, spacing and support

Use one plant in a container at least 40cm wide and deep, or one plant per standard growing bag. Larger volumes buffer moisture and root temperature. Place the container in its final position before a vine is attached to supports.

Space vertically trained plants about 45cm apart. Trailing plants need at least 90cm and substantial room for side shoots. Install strong mesh, wires or strings and guide stems with soft ties. Heavy fruit grown above ground needs an individual net or fabric sling fixed to the support—not to the vine.

Outdoor fruit resting on the soil should sit on a tile or board to reduce rotting and slug damage. Keep the fruit exposed to light without stripping off so many leaves that the plant loses its photosynthetic capacity.

Water, feeding and training

Keep the root zone consistently moist. Water deeply at the base and avoid sudden cycles of drought and saturation, which can check growth or split fruit. In a greenhouse, morning watering allows foliage and surfaces to dry before night.

Begin a high-potassium liquid feed after fruit has set, following its label. Do not overfeed a cold or waterlogged plant. Mulch warm soil or shade a hot container to reduce moisture swings.

Train a main stem upward and pinch it when it reaches the support, then manage side shoots according to the cultivar. Once selected fruits are growing, pinch each fruiting side shoot two or three leaves beyond its last retained fruit. Remove weak, damaged and overcrowded growth rather than pruning by habit alone.

Pollination and fruit load

Melon vines carry separate male and female flowers; females have a tiny fruit behind the petals. Bees pollinate outdoor crops. In a greenhouse, open vents and doors during flowering where safe, or hand-pollinate by transferring fresh pollen from a male flower to a receptive female flower.

Poorly pollinated fruit may yellow and drop while still small. Once several fruits reach about 2.5cm, keep the strongest and remove excess. RHS guidance suggests four to six fruits on a greenhouse plant and no more than about four outdoors. A short or cool season may justify fewer.

Some hybrid cultivars have specific pruning or pollination instructions. Follow the supplier when it conflicts with a general method.

Remove badly diseased material and clean supports after the season. Rotate ungrafted cucurbits where soil-borne disease has been confirmed.

Ripeness and harvest

Ripeness cues vary. Cantaloupes often develop a stronger aroma, warmer background colour and a slight crack around the stem; some “slip” cleanly when ready. Honeydews may change colour without slipping. Use the cultivar description rather than tapping the fruit or judging size alone.

Cut fruit with a short stem if the variety does not slip naturally. Let harvest fruit cool, then store it according to type. Melons do not gain missing sweetness after an early harvest, although texture and aroma may soften.

Record sowing, planting, first female flower, pollination and harvest dates, plus the number of fruits ripened. Those measurements show whether the next improvement should be an earlier cultivar, more heat or a lighter fruit load.
