Fix common indoor growing problems

Most indoor growing problems are cultural: too little light, too much water, a pot that has run its course or a room that has changed. Diagnose the environment before you buy a product, and fix the cause rather than the symptom.

Diagnose before you treat

The University of California IPM houseplant guide is blunt about the pattern: most plant problems indoors are caused by improper care and environmental conditions, not by pests or disease. Before reaching for any product, work through the basics: light level and recent changes, moisture in the growing medium, temperature and drafts, drainage, and the watering and feeding routine. The Iowa State University guide to poor-culture problems adds that several factors often contribute at once, so identify and correct all of them, focusing on the primary cause.

Examine the whole plant, not just the worst leaf: both leaf surfaces, stems, the soil line and, where practical, the roots. Compare the affected plant with healthy ones in the same setup, and note when the problem started and what changed around then — a new lamp, a move, a season change, a watering routine or a new purchase. Stressed plants are also more vulnerable to pests and disease, so a cultural fix often prevents a bigger problem. Wilting: dry roots or dead roots?

Wilting is the most common alarm and the easiest to misread. The UC IPM guide notes that wilting is usually caused by underwatering or excessive light, but may also be due to root decay from soil pathogens, often associated with overwatering or poor drainage — and it advises inspecting the root system whenever wilting occurs.

Check the medium first. If it is dry below the surface, water thoroughly until some excess drains, then watch for recovery. If the medium is still wet and the plant is wilting, suspect root stress but do not assume a single cause: prolonged saturation, root or stem damage, disease, cold and other problems can produce similar symptoms. The Iowa State guide warns that roots kept in wet medium can develop root rot, causing wilting that prompts more watering and makes the problem worse. A soft, waterlogged stem base is a strong warning sign.

To check the roots, tip the plant out and look. Healthy roots are generally firm; rotten roots are dark, soft and mushy. A valuable plant with limited early damage may be salvageable by removing affected roots, repotting in fresh, well-draining medium in a clean container with drainage and correcting the conditions that kept it wet. Discard a plant with extensive root or crown rot rather than presenting repotting as a reliable cure. Yellowing leaves and leaf drop

Yellowing is a general stress signal with several causes. The UC IPM guide lists inadequate light, exposure to low temperatures, overwatering, poor soil drainage and soil-borne pests or disease as causes of yellowing and dropping leaves. The University of Maryland Extension describes wilting or yellowing of the lower and inner leaves as a primary symptom of overwatering.

Where the yellowing appears helps narrow it down. Yellow-green older leaves can point to insufficient nutrition (usually nitrogen), poor root health from pot-bound growth, compacted soil or overwatering, insufficient light, or sap-sucking pests. Yellow-green newer leaves suggest overwatering, a soil pH imbalance or a micronutrient deficiency. If the whole plant is pale and the environment is unchanged, look at the roots and the light before adding fertiliser — extra feed cannot fix a root or light problem, and it can make a salt problem worse.

Leggy, stretched growth

Leaves on long petioles and stems with long internodes — the classic "leggy" look — are usually caused by inadequate light, according to the UC IPM guide. The plant is stretching toward the source. The fix is light, not pruning: move the plant closer to the window, add or reposition a grow light, and check the hanging height and schedule. One other cause to check is over-fertilisation: the Iowa State guide notes that it can produce abundant but lanky, rapid growth, and a white crust on the medium, saucer or pot indicates accumulated salts. That evidence does not rule out inadequate light; both problems can occur together, so check the light level as well as the feeding record.

Brown tips, scorched leaves and pale patches

Brown or scorched leaf tips and margins have a wide cause list in the UC IPM guide: overwatering, excessive soil dryness between waterings, excess fertiliser or other soluble salts, low humidity, too much sun or heat through a window, a drafty setting, or chemical or mechanical injury. The University of Maryland Extension adds that excessive fertiliser specifically leads to browning or dieback of leaf tips and margins, while strong sun and heat cause pale, bleached or faded areas on leaves.

Work through the likely causes in order. If the tips are browning and the medium is bone dry, the plant is being under-watered; if it is constantly damp, the roots are the problem. If the damage is on the side of the plant facing a hot window, move it back or add shade. If you have been feeding on a fixed schedule, cut back and flush. No flowers or fruit

A plant that grows but never sets flowers or fruit is usually missing light or the right temperature. The UC IPM guide points to improper nighttime temperatures — too low or too high — or inadequate light, in duration, intensity or both. Leafy crops and many herbs do not need to flower at all, so for those the goal is steady growth rather than bloom.

For fruiting crops such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, the requirements are higher: strong light, steady warmth, enough root space and support. Tomatoes benefit from vibrating or gently shaking open flowers, while peppers are self-fertile but may benefit from similar movement. Cucumber pollination is cultivar-specific: transfer pollen for mixed-flowering outdoor or ridge types, but do not pollinate all-female greenhouse cultivars. Salt build-up and fertiliser problems

Fertiliser and mineral salts accumulate in containers that receive repeated feed and little drainage. The University of Maryland Extension describes the tell as white crystallised residue on leaves or the potting medium. The Iowa State guide adds that in extreme cases the salt build-up is visible as a crust on the soil surface, in saucers, or on the outside of porous clay containers, and that the salts damage roots, leading to browning or yellowing leaves, leaf drop and wilting.

The fix is to flush and reduce. Water abundantly with clear water until it runs out of the drainage hole, so excess salts are carried out. Then reduce the frequency and concentration of feeding: the Iowa State guide advises using outdoor-rate fertilisers at half or quarter strength indoors, and only while the plant is actively growing, because a resting plant does not use the feed and the salts just build up. Pot-bound plants and tired medium

As roots fill a container, the plant changes behaviour. The University of Maryland Extension notes that pot-bound plants typically become too dry and show brown or dead leaf tips, while the Iowa State guide notes that old, broken-down, compacted soil holds more water and contributes to accidental overwatering. Either way, the container has run its course.

Watch for roots circling the inside of the pot or emerging from the drainage holes, a pot that dries out much faster than before, and a plant that stops growing while the environment stays the same. Repot into a container only a size larger with fresh, well-draining medium, or refresh the medium in the same pot. The container guide covers sizing, depth and material for each crop.

Know when to discard a plant

Not every plant can be saved. The Iowa State University houseplant disease guide notes that plants with established root rot rarely recover, and the UC IPM guide says that once a problem is detected it is sometimes not practical to restore a plant's health — in those cases it is better to discard the plant and start fresh. For an edible crop, a heavily diseased or infested plant is a risk to the rest of the setup, so remove it, wash your hands, and sanitise the pot and tray before reusing them.

Before discarding, do a final check that the diagnosis is right: a plant that looks dead from overwatering is sometimes just pot-bound and dry, and a plant that looks pest-damaged may simply be in the wrong light. When in doubt, check the roots and the medium one more time.

Run a five-minute diagnosis

For any struggling plant, check in this order: moisture below the surface of the medium, root colour and firmness, light level and recent changes, temperature and drafts, and the watering and feeding record. Most indoor problems are found in the first two checks.
