Define the job before buying material
Decide whether the cover must reduce cold or wind exposure, exclude a known pest, deter birds, warm the soil or protect seedlings from heavy weather. Name the crop, threat, start date and removal condition. A cover marketed for general protection may fail if its openings are too large, its insulation is too low or its structure traps unsuitable heat.
Use the pest-management guide to confirm damage before excluding an organism. If the purpose is frost protection, compare the crop's tolerance with the local forecast and remember that a light cover provides only limited buffering, not a heated environment.
Match the material to the purpose
Horticultural fleece is lightweight and porous, providing some shelter and modest cold protection while allowing rain and air through. Insect-proof mesh prioritises exclusion and must have openings small enough for the target. Bird netting needs a supported, taut structure and careful wildlife management. A clear cloche or plastic tunnel can warm a row but needs closer ventilation and condensation checks.
Shade mesh, windbreak material and opaque ground covers perform different jobs and should not be substituted without understanding light, airflow and water movement. Read the manufacturer's specifications for mesh size, light transmission, expected life and installation; appearance alone does not establish performance.
Install before the risk arrives
An exclusion cover works best before the pest can reach the crop. Check transplants, soil and existing leaves so eggs, larvae, slugs or diseased material are not enclosed underneath. For a weather cover, install supports and anchors before the forecast event rather than handling loose sheets in strong wind.
Allow enough material for the crop's mature height and width. Use smooth hoops or a suitable frame where foliage must not touch the mesh, and keep sharp edges from tearing it. Seal the full perimeter against the target pest without blocking drainage or creating a trip hazard.
Protect wildlife from entanglement
Loose, damaged or poorly supported netting can trap birds and other animals. Keep any necessary net taut, close gaps, secure edges and inspect it frequently. Do not leave redundant netting draped on the ground, fence or crop; clean, roll and store it securely when the protection period ends.
Very fine mesh or fleece can reduce some entanglement risks but still requires secure installation. The RSPCA wildlife-friendly gardening advice recommends keeping vegetable-patch netting tight and checking it regularly. If wildlife is repeatedly caught or able to enter, remove the arrangement and redesign it.
Plan for pollination
Excluding insects also excludes pollinators. Leaf and root crops may be covered through stages where pollination is irrelevant to the harvest, but insect-pollinated fruiting crops need access during flowering unless a reliable alternative pollination method is used. Identify the crop's flowering period before deciding the cover dates.
Removing and replacing a cover can let the target pest in, so timing must balance both risks. The RHS insect-proof mesh guide notes that crops such as strawberries and courgettes are not suited to insect-proof mesh during flowering. Record when the first flowers open rather than relying only on a calendar reminder.
Monitor the climate underneath
Conditions below a cover can differ sharply from the open garden. Check temperature, soil moisture, humidity and airflow at plant level, particularly in bright weather. Ventilate cloches and solid covers before excess heat damages seedlings, and secure them again before cold or strong wind.
Rain may pass through fleece or mesh unevenly and may not reach soil beneath solid covers at all. Inspect the root zone with the vegetable-watering guide. Increased shelter and humidity can also favour slugs or disease, so look under leaves and around edges during every visit.
Keep access practical
Design one side or end to open without dismantling the whole structure. The gardener must be able to weed, thin, water, inspect and harvest, then reseal the cover correctly. If access is awkward, small problems can remain hidden until the crop is badly affected.
Label the covered bed with the material, purpose and next inspection date. Avoid placing hard-to-see lines, pegs or low frames across paths. On shared plots, make the structure visible and confirm that its height and materials comply with the site's rules.
Inspect, repair and remove
At each check, look for tears, widened mesh, lifted edges, pooled water, abrasion and trapped growth. Patch repairable material using a method compatible with the product. A small hole can defeat insect exclusion, while stretched mesh may no longer have the opening size it was bought to provide.
Remove the cover when the defined threat has passed or its disadvantages outweigh the protection. Clean off soil and plant debris, dry the material and store it away from sunlight and rodents if it will be reused. Prefer durable, reusable sizes that fit several beds, and check local disposal options when plastic-based material reaches the end of its life.
