Choose crops that suit direct sowing
Direct sowing places seed where the crop will grow to harvest. It avoids pots, indoor space and transplant disturbance, making it particularly useful for many root crops, peas, beans, salads and quick-growing vegetables. It is not automatically the best method for every crop or season: tender plants may need more warmth, while slow-growing seedlings can be difficult to protect in a busy bed.
Start with the chosen variety's current seed-packet instructions and the relevant plant guide. Check whether the crop is normally sown in its final position, in an outdoor seedbed for later transplanting or under cover. The RHS vegetable seed-sowing guide explains how these routes differ.
Use conditions rather than a date alone
A national sowing month is only a starting window. Soil temperature, saturation, compaction, wind exposure and the short-term forecast determine whether seed can germinate and survive at a particular site. Wait if the ground is frozen, waterlogged, powder-dry or too sticky to prepare without damaging its structure.
Make small repeat sowings instead of risking the entire seed allowance on the first mild day. A later batch provides resilience if cold, heavy rain, pests or surface crusting affect the first. Record actual emergence, not just the sowing date, so next year's timing is based on local evidence.
Prepare a consistent seedbed
Remove established weeds and large debris, then create a level surface that is fine enough around the seed while retaining stable structure below. Break down only the clods that would prevent accurate depth or seed-to-soil contact. Avoid repeatedly pulverising or turning the whole bed, especially when it is wet.
A firm base reduces irregular sinking and drying. If the surface is very dry, water the intended drill before sowing and allow the water to soak in rather than washing freshly covered seed out afterward. Correct drainage and severe compaction before treating the area as a seedbed; a loose top layer cannot compensate for saturated or impenetrable soil beneath it.
Sow in labelled drills
A straight or deliberately curved drill makes emerging crop seedlings easier to distinguish from weeds. Mark the row, make an even channel at the packet's stated depth, distribute seed as uniformly as practical and cover with the specified amount of soil. Lightly firm the surface so seed contacts moist soil without creating a hard cap.
Seed size is a useful clue but not a replacement for variety instructions: small seed is generally sown shallower than large seed. Sowing too deeply can exhaust a seedling before it reaches light, while very shallow seed may dry, wash away or become accessible to animals. Label the crop, variety and sowing date at once.
Plan final spacing before the seed emerges
Packet spacing usually distinguishes the distance between plants from the distance between rows. Decide whether you will place larger seeds individually, sow thinly and remove extras, or harvest some young plants while leaving the remainder to mature. Dense sowing does not guarantee a fuller crop; it can create weak seedlings, poor airflow and difficult thinning.
Use the garden bed planner to reserve the mature footprint, not just the narrow seed line. Leave enough access to thin, weed, water and harvest without stepping into adjacent rows.
Keep the seed zone evenly moist
Check the shallow seed zone frequently because it dries faster than established root depth. Apply a fine, gentle flow that moistens the soil without moving seed or forming channels. Once seedlings establish deeper roots, shift to the measured root-zone approach in the vegetable-watering guide.
Do not keep poorly drained soil continuously saturated. Seed can fail because it rots, is eaten, was not viable or encountered unsuitable temperature—not simply because it lacked water. Inspect conditions and compare a later sowing before changing several variables at once.
Thin without damaging the remaining crop
Identify true crop seedlings before thinning. Work while unwanted seedlings are still small and the soil releases them easily, holding nearby plants steady where necessary. If pulling would disturb closely spaced roots, cut surplus seedlings at the surface with clean, fine scissors instead.
Thin toward the final spacing in one or more passes as the crop guide directs. Remove thinnings from the bed if they are diseased or could shelter pests. Water the row gently if the work has loosened the plants that remain.
Protect only against a defined risk
Mark rows clearly so they are not hoed or walked on. Use fleece, mesh, cloches or other protection only when it matches a known weather or pest risk, and inspect underneath. Covers can also create excess heat, humidity, shade or access problems, so follow the crop-cover guide rather than assuming any cover improves germination.
The RHS outdoor-sowing guide recommends drills as a practical way to identify seedlings and emphasises matching outdoor sowing time to the plant. When emergence is poor, record the pattern: gaps along one row suggest different causes from failure across an entire bed.
Run a germination check
Record the seed lot, sowing date, depth, weather, first emergence and approximate proportion that emerged. If a sowing fails, inspect the seed zone and make a small controlled repeat rather than immediately resowing the whole row.
