Understand what no-dig changes
In a no-dig system, the bed is not routinely turned or rotavated. Mature organic matter is applied at the surface, soil organisms incorporate it gradually and crops are sown or planted with only the local disturbance needed. Permanent beds and paths reduce traffic across the growing area.
The method can preserve existing channels and reduce the amount of buried weed seed brought to the surface. It does not mean the soil is never touched: harvesting roots, making planting holes, removing a persistent weed and correcting a diagnosed local problem are compatible with minimising overall cultivation.
Assess the site before covering it
Use the site-assessment guide to investigate previous land use, soil depth, drainage, compaction, invasive weeds and access. Do not cover suspected contamination, buried waste, standing water or an unresolved service route. Organic matter on top cannot make unsafe soil safe or give excess water somewhere to drain.
Identify perennial weeds and decide how they will be controlled before building the bed. Woody crowns, vigorous rhizomes and growth entering from a boundary may need removal or a long-term containment plan. Follow the weed-management guide and keep the location visible for later inspection.
Define beds and paths
Make beds narrow enough to reach from the available sides without standing on the growing surface. Allow paths for the actual wheelbarrow, watering equipment or mobility aid, and choose a surface that remains safe in wet weather. Mark edges clearly so the layout survives when crops are small or the soil is covered.
A no-dig bed does not need high sides. Ground-level beds use fewer materials and allow roots to explore the soil below, while raised beds may help access or lift the root zone above some wet conditions. Compare the complete systems in raised beds versus in-ground gardens.
Choose clean, mature organic matter
Use well-decomposed garden compost, composted manure or another material known to be suitable for food-growing soil. Understand its source, maturity, salt and nutrient risks, contaminants and weed burden. Fresh or unstable material can affect seedlings and tie up or release nutrients unpredictably.
Calculate bed area and intended application depth before ordering. Imported material has cost, transport and storage impacts, so begin with an area that matches the reliable supply. Home-produced compost can close the loop over time; the home composting guide helps plan inputs and capacity.
Convert an existing bed carefully
On a reasonably clean established bed, remove problem weeds and spread mature organic matter across the surface without first turning the soil. Avoid burying crop crowns and permanent plant stems. Rake only enough to create a practical, level surface for planting.
Cardboard is sometimes used to suppress grass or annual weeds when creating a bed. Use plain material without plastic tape or labels, overlap gaps and wet it before covering where appropriate. Do not use cardboard to conceal persistent perennial weeds, contaminated ground, rubble or poor drainage, and do not leave exposed edges that can lift in wind.
Sow and plant with minimal disturbance
Set transplants into individual holes through the surface layer, ensuring roots contact moist growing material and are planted at the correct depth. Direct-sow into a fine, mature surface that can hold consistent moisture; coarse or unfinished mulch is not a reliable seedbed. The direct-sowing guide covers depth, drills and early care.
If the organic layer is shallow, open a narrow drill into the soil below rather than adding an unsuitable fine compost purely for appearance. Judge results by emergence, rooting, crop health and soil condition—not by whether the method remained visually untouched.
Maintain the bed through the season
Pull or shallow-hoe weeds while they are small and avoid scattering mature seed. Replace organic matter according to crop demand, soil observations and the material's characteristics rather than adding a large amount automatically. Keep paths from spreading grass or weeds into the bed.
Mulched soil can retain moisture, but crops still need direct checks during dry weather. Inspect below the surface with the vegetable-watering guide. Watch for slugs and other organisms using damp cover, especially around young plants, without assuming the mulch itself is the sole cause of damage.
Use targeted correction when evidence requires it
Severe compaction, a hard construction layer, buried debris or failed drainage may require physical investigation and repair. Resolve the defined problem with the least disturbance practical, then return the area to surface-led management if it remains suitable. Refusing to inspect the soil is not the same as protecting it.

Start at a maintainable scale
A small bed supplied with known compost and inspected consistently is a better trial than covering the whole garden with material of uncertain quality. Expand when the input supply and results are repeatable.
